چکیده

We elucidate the unifying aspects of self-organized criticality (SOC) and turbulence through analysis of data from a laboratory dusty plasma monolayer. We compare analysis of experimental data with simulations of a twodimensional (2D) many-body system, of 2D chaotic fluid flow, and two different SOC-models, the Zhang and the Bak–Tang–Wiesenfeld (BTW) models, all subject to steady random forcing at small scales. The scale-free vortex cascade is apparent from structure functions as well as spatio-temporal avalanche analysis. We find similar scaling exponents for the experiment, the many-body simulation, and the fluid simulation, indicating some common dynamical features. However, the exponents of the Zhang model are different from those of the BTW model, and they are all different from those of the dust and fluid systems. Thus, we conclude that the dust monolayer dynamics can be viewed as turbulent as well as avalanching, but a fluid model is a better representation of the dust dynamics for this particular experiment than the sandpile models considered. The experiment exhibits global fluctuation statistics consistent with a recent hypothesis predicting universal non-Gaussian probability density functions, 6 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Kelvin-wave turbulence generated by vortex reconnections

Reconnections of quantum vortex filaments create sharp bends which degenerate into propagating Kelvin waves. These waves cascade their energy down-scale and their waveaction up-scale via weakly nonlinear interactions, and this is the main mechanism of turbulence at the scales less than the inter-vortex distance. In case of an idealised forcing concentrated around a single scale k0, the turbulen...

Spectrally Condensed Fluid Turbulence and L-H Transitions in Plasma∗)

Recent experimental and theoretical studies of two-dimensional (2D) turbulence reveal that spectrally condensed turbulence which is a system of coupled large-scale coherent flow and broadband turbulence, is similar to plasma turbulence near the L-H transition threshold. Large condensate vortices fed via the turbulent inverse energy cascade, can control both the level of the broadband turbulence...

Crude closure dynamics through large scale statistical theories

Crude closure algorithms based on equilibrium large scale statistical theories involving only a few constraints are developed here. These algorithms involve the nonlinear evolution of either a single parameter, the energy, for dynamic closure based on equilibrium energy-enstrophy statistical theory, or two parameters, the energy and circulation, for crude dynamic closure based on the equilibriu...

Stall Vortex Shedding over a Compressor Cascade (RESEARCH NOTE)

The unstable flow with rotating-stall-like (RS) effects in a rotor-cascade of an axial compressor was numerically investigated. The RS was captured with the reduction in mass flow rate and increasing of exit static pressure with respect to design operating condition of the single rotor. The oscillatory velocity traces during the stall propagation showed that the RS vortices repeat periodically,...
